Book presentation of Adán en Edén by Carlos Fuentes
The event will take place at 5:00 pm at the BP HALL, WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL / 111 South Grand Avenue. Los Angeles, CA. 90012.
Organized by the University of Guadalajara Foundation in the United States of America, Inc. and the University of Guadalajara at Los Angeles (UDGLA) as part of their permanent cultural program, and in collaboration with CULTURAUDG, a presentation of the new Carlos Fuentes book Adán en Edén, will be held on April 10 in Los Angeles. The novel, published by Alfaguara, uses journalistic techniques to tackle two of the most troublesome issues affecting Mexican life and society: drug trafficking and the corruption of the country’s political class.
Fuentes, in keeping with his commitment to mirror the reality of Mexico in his writing, presents a snapshot of a modern-day Mexican society not embroiled in a crisis of values, as was the case in Aura, La región más transparente, Diana o la cazadora solitaria, La frontera de cristal and Las buenas conciencias, but in a conflict of interest between established power and organized crime organizations. The two main characters, Adán Gorozpe and Adán Góngora, embody the most extreme aspect of moral corruption, steamrolling over everything and everyone in their path.
The book’s cover design encapsulates the effects that social inequality, an absence of democracy and the rhetoric of politicians droning on in the midst of an invasion by organized crime have on Mexican society: A child of the streets wearing angel’s wings and clown makeup preaches to passers-by who fervently listen to him because they believe, want to believe and need to believe.
This presentation of Adán en Edén will feature appearances by Demián Bichir and Dolores Heredia, two icons of contemporary Mexican cinema whose acting careers have been nothing short of remarkable. Demián and Dolores will deliver a dramatized reading of passages from the book, breathing life into the characters that Fuentes has created by drawing on realities of everyday life and whose majestic literary style perfectly captures the unrepentant love that intertwines their personal stories. Fuentes himself will also be present.
The author, in comments to the media in Buenos Aires, Argentina, surmised that his latest work "plays around with the concepts of truth and falsehood, so that no one can argue the existence of absolute truth, a dictatorship."
