As part of the University of Guadalajara at Los Angeles’ liaison activities, eight university delegations participated in the Ordinary General Assembly of the Federación de Clubes Jaliscienses en California  (Federation of Clubs of Jalisco Natives in California) on January 8. In attendance were: the chairman of the Federation, Libier Jiménez;  María Quezada, CEO of the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE); Jesús Padilla, vice chairman of the Club Cañadas de Obregón; Gustavo Padilla, Executive Coordinator of the University of Guadalajara at Los Angeles (UDGLA); Eduardo González, coordinator of the Casas Universitarias Project of the Virtual University System of the University of Guadalajara;  Carmen Cervantes, Operations Coordinator of the UDGLA; Gabriel Sotomayor, Projects Manager in Los Angeles.

During the assembly, Gustavo Padilla and Eduardo González introduced the members of the Federación de Clubes. They also introduced projects such as the University of Guadalajara at Los Angeles, CASAs Universitarias,  the distance education project, as well as academic and cultural projects that are planned for this year and will benefit the community of migrants from Jalisco.

Regarding the CASA Universitaria project,  the coordinator of the project, Eduardo González, explained that it is a program that may assist young people and adults who wish to begin or complete their high school, undergraduate and postgraduate studies, in addition to receiving training and new knowledge that will prove useful in their personal and professional lives. He explained that it is also a meeting point between the community and the University where individuals can receive educational services delivered in both on-site and virtual settings.

There are currently 36 CASAs Universitarias operating in the Jalisco, each of which offers formal studies, continuing education, academic advising and tutoring as well as archives of educational and self-access materials.

Gustavo Padilla, following a brief introduction to the UDGLA project, encouraged participants to spread the word about its educational services. He also asked those in attendance to support for CASAs in Jalisco and future CASAs in California by helping in the search for donations and other economic contributions needed for these projects, which will contribute to the well-being of the Mexican-American community.

For their part, the members of the Federación de Clubes Jaliscienses en California expressed interest not only in promoting the activities of the University of Guadalajara in the region, but also in establishing mechanisms for institutional collaboration to carry out joint activities such as adding cultural components to events such as the “Jalisco Week” in Southern California.
